According to the Oxford English Dictionary swimming is described as the "sport or activity of propelling oneself through water using Limbs". "Swimming is derived from the word swim, meaning to move through water by means of fins, tail, or the limbs".

Swimming is an activity that burns lots of calories, and is easy on the joints and it also supports your weight, builds up your muscular strength and improves fitness. Swimming is also a healthy, low-cost activity that you can continue throughout your life. It is a low impact activity that has many physical and mental health benefits, it is also a great workout because you need to move you whole body against the resistance of water.

"Some people who enjoy swimming take it to a competitive level. This can provide the health benefits of a vigorous workout as well as the fan and thrill of completion". (Better health channel.com). Swimming is therefore a great recreational activity for people of all ages. Recreational swimming can provide you with a low-impact workout and it is also a good way to relax and feel good.

According to Mike Gustafson, there are 10 reasons why swimming is the best and maybe the worst sport ever:

Swimming makes you equal parts confident and awkward
Swimming see more sunrises than anyone else
Swimming can make you smarter
Swimmers are the cleanest athletes in sports
Swimming makes you sexy. It also makes you broke
You can swim forever
Swimming is the ultimate escape
Swimming is therefore the most popular sport in Olympics, but you can’t watch it live
Swimming is like flying

(Mike Gustafson, 2013).
